Dumb Ways to Survive is a spin-off game from the very popular Dumb Ways to Die franchise. The game was developed by PlaySide – an independent studio based in Melbourne, Australia. Dumb Ways to Survive was released by Netflix Inc. in 2024 on their app distribution channel. However, due to Netflix’s policy of diverting content from independent games, Dumb Ways to Survive, like many other games of similar scale, was removed from Netflix in July 2025.
Introduce about Dumb Ways to Survive
Welcome to Beanland!
Dumb Ways to Survive opens with a group of pea friends on a trip to Beanland. They drive into a forest with a sign that says “Safe Woods”. However, ironically, the sign actually says “Un Safe Witless Woods”, a tree obscuring the words “Un” and “Witless”. The pea friends are unaware of this. Naturally, they soon have an accident when their car plunges into a ravine.
The game begins with just two pea friends; the whereabouts of the others are unknown. One of the pea friends – Noob – is a character with the qualities of an adventurer. Dumb Ways to Survive puts you in the role of Noob. Your mission, along with Noob’s, is to explore and find the necessary parts to repair the vehicle, and above all, to survive in this dangerous forest.
Gameplay
Dumb Ways to Survive features a top-down, third-person perspective gameplay design. Like other games, you control Noob using the joystick on the left side of the screen. The joystick only appears and activates when your finger touches about one-third of the left side of the screen. On the right is a large virtual button for using tools, surrounded by four smaller virtual buttons for switching tools.
In its normal state, Noob attacks when you press the tool button. If it hits a living creature, the game will consider that creature attacked and deduct health. This means that some creatures can instantly change state upon being hit, such as attacking back or running away.
Note that tools have a certain durability, and the durability stat decreases each time you use the tool. If the durability drops to 0, the tool will break and disappear. Also, you cannot attack without any tools in hand.
For most tools in Dumb Ways to Survive, attacking is just a secondary function. Each tool has a different primary function, operating in different locations. For example, a shovel allows you to dig up buried objects, but this function can only be used where such objects are present.
Additionally, Dumb Ways to Survive allows you to use one tool to perform the function of another. For example, you can use a shovel to chop trees or an axe to break rocks. Of course, their effectiveness will be greatly reduced. Similarly, if you have a tool that isn’t a weapon, you can still attack, but the damage will be limited.
Survival mechanics in Dumb Ways to Survive
Noob has three main stats: food, water, and health. Food and water decrease over time. When you eat or drink, the corresponding stat is restored. If either stat drops to zero, Noob’s health will continuously decrease until death. Health in Dumb Ways to Survive is similar to other games. It decreases when taking environmental damage, hunger, thirst, or being attacked.
If, for any reason, Noob’s health drops to zero, he will die immediately. Depending on the difficulty level you choose at the start, Dumb Ways to Survive has different penalties for letting Noob die. On Thrive and Survive difficulty, Noob will respawn at the van – the starting point of the game. You will still retain your items and tools and continue your progress from where Noob died. However, on the highest difficulty – Die – if Noob dies, he cannot be respawned, meaning your entire progress for that playthrough will be lost.
Day, night, and weather in Dumb Ways to Survive
Dumb Ways to Survive features a day and night system, affecting your visibility of the surroundings. During the day, you’ll have full visibility in all locations. However, at night, full visibility is only available around the campfire; once you leave this area, your visibility is reduced by 90%. Additionally, Dumb Ways to Survive has a weather system, which affects gameplay as follows:
- Heavy Rain: Restores your character’s water stats.
- Windy: Increases your character’s movement speed.
- Sandstorm: Obstructs your surrounding vision.
- Blizzard: Reduces vision and makes your character hungry faster.
- Hail: Summons hailstones to randomly fall on your location, dealing damage.
- Volcanic Smoke: Creates lightning bolts near your character, dealing damage if hit.
- Heatwave: Causes your character’s water to deplete extremely quickly.
- Star Shower: Drops star fragments, dealing damage. This weather type also restores durability to your equipment.
- Tropical Cyclone: Significantly reduces your character’s movement speed, but also restores their water.
