Getting Home is a 3D space-themed game created by a single programmer named Arctic Meadow AB. Designed as a skill-based puzzle game, this game requires dexterity and patience from the player to overcome the challenges. Getting Home is currently available through Google Play and the App Store, as a one-time paid game.

Introduce about Getting Home

Gameplay

In Getting Home, your task is to control the space shuttle so that it lands safely at the landing station. Getting Home provides you with only two virtual buttons, located in the bottom left and bottom right corners of the screen. When you press or hold either of the virtual buttons, the shuttle will rotate in the corresponding direction. When you press and hold both buttons simultaneously, the shuttle will launch.

Launching will propel the shuttle forward in the direction of its bow. Your shuttle in Getting Home has a limited fuel supply. Launching consumes fuel, while turning does not. Therefore, if you run out of fuel, you will no longer be able to use the Launch function.

As you approach the landing station, your ship will deploy its landing gear. At this point, your ship will gradually descend towards the landing station. You win the level in Getting Home if you successfully land. Your score is calculated in stars based on landing distance, completion time, and fuel consumption, up to a maximum of 3 stars. A new level will be unlocked each time you win a level, regardless of your score. Conversely, if your ship crashes and explodes, Getting Home will return your ship to its starting position, meaning you have to replay that level from the beginning.

Collision mechanism

Most objects that appear in the level can collide with and damage your ship. Getting Home has a Hull Integrity stat, which measures the condition of your ship’s hull. If you allow your ship to collide and this stat drops to 0, your ship will explode and you will fail the level.

Typically, a single collision is enough to cause the ship to explode instantly. However, interestingly, the extent of damage from a collision is directly proportional to the ship’s speed. Therefore, if you can reduce your ship’s speed to a minimum before a collision occurs, your ship will withstand one more collision, regardless of how fast the impacting object is.

Physical system

The physics system accounts for 90% of Getting Home’s gameplay content. Although the controls are quite simple with two virtual buttons, the accompanying physics make the game relatively complex and challenging. Set in outer space, Getting Home fully and realistically simulates the physics of a microgravity environment.

The ship’s rotation and launch will accelerate and gain inertia. This means that even after you stop the rotation, your ship will continue to rotate or move in the previous direction for a while longer. The game does not have a direct braking or stopping feature. The only way to stop or decelerate quickly is to launch the ship in the opposite direction of its movement.

Even after reaching the landing point, your ship isn’t entirely safe. The physics in Getting Home involve reaction force. Upon landing, this reaction force will propel the landing gear upwards, depending on your landing force. Furthermore, if you don’t land straight, the ship will not only bounce but also tilt, making subsequent landings more difficult. Be sure to reduce your ship’s speed to the lowest possible level and maintain balance before landing.

Despite being developed by a single person, Getting Home boasts beautiful graphics and deep gameplay. The game features a complex physics system and a ship with relatively difficult controls. These two elements make Getting Home extremely challenging, testing the player’s dexterity and patience. Overall, Getting Home is a creative and high-quality game. If you enjoy challenging games, this is the game for you.
